Audra Bucklin

Good Evening PES,

I try very hard not to spend too much time talking about the weather in my weekly emails but…Brrr! They weren’t kidding about the wind chills. Glad this isn’t sticking around too long. I hope you were all safe and warm through the worst of it!

Tomorrow should be a perfect day for the PTA Winter Carnival from 12 to 3 at the school. Please see attached flier for more details. It’s a great event and this year they’ve added Chili tasting to the festivities!

Actually, the next two weeks are full of opportunities to connect with the PES community as follows:

Cybersecurity Panel Discussion - this Tuesday, February 7th - 6 to 7 pm. Learn about everything from our firewall and monitoring capabilities to trends in online safety concerns. This is a big topic and we are eager to partner with you to keep our students safe and productive online. Babysitting Available. See attached flier for full details.

Middle School (6 to 8) Dance - This Friday, February 10th - 7 to 9 pm - $8 per student; $2 carnations available at the door. If your child plans to invite a friend from another district, they must submit a permission form for Principal approval no later than Thursday at 8:05 am.  Forms are available in the office.

SAVE THE DATE - Meet our Superintendent Finalists - Wednesday, February 15th - Time TBD

Family Fun Night - Thursday, February 16th - Join us for community drumming with YouthBeatz (5 to 5:45) followed by a potluck and Family (Math) Game Night.

  • The drumming is rescheduled from September and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome Mr. Rich to work with our students throughout the week, culminating in this community presentation and an all school assembly on Friday morning. Mr. Rich and PES are pitching in to provide some pizzas and we welcome your side dishes, beverages and other selections potluck style!
  • Our school has a large collection of games with math skills and strategies embedded in them, all of which are available for kids and families to check out and play at home. Please join us after the Youth Beatz performance and potluck for our inaugural Family Game Night and test out some of the games we have in our collection. Rat-a-Tat Cat, Sleeping Queens, Check the Fridge, Clumsy Thief, Yahtzee, Ticket to Ride, Splendor, and many more will be out for you and your family to try. February vacation will be just around the corner, and it could be a great time to check out a game to enjoy for a longer time at home. We hope you will join us!

FAST Make-Up Days: Now onto hoping for plenty of snowmaking capability at night over the next two weeks. With any luck we will finish FAST with full programs on-board this Friday and next. The goal is as follows:

  • Whaleback - 5 session - 1/13, 1/20*, 1/27, 2/10, & 2/17  (*1/20 was a snow day but they honored lessons that afternoon.)
  • Swimming - 4 sessions - 1/27, 2/4, 2/10 & 2/17
  • Skating - 4 sessions - 1/27, 2/4, 2/10 & 2/17
  • Horsemanship - 3 sessions* - 1/27, 2/10 & 2/17 (*We will be in touch about a refund or credit)
  • All other programs - 3 sessions - 1/27, 2/10 & 2/17

Thank you for your patience. It really is a tricky time of the year to pull this off!

It’s Almost Winter Break: As we approach the final stretch before the February Winter Break (2/20 to 2/24) Student Council and the SPICE committee are at it again! The student council has planned a spirit week leading into vacation (Monday 2/13-2/17)!

  • Monday - PJ Day
  • Tuesday - Red/Pink/Valentine’s
  • Wednesday - Jersey/Sports Day
  • Thursday - Throwback to the 80s
  • Friday - Dress Like a Tourist

In the spirit of kindness and warming of hearts, the SPICE Committee is leading the charge to help our school community collect items for the Plainfield Pantry. We have set up a tree in the front hallway that is decorated with paper hearts indicating an item of need. Wish list items include household paper goods (tissue, single wrapped toilet paper), and food pantry items (canned/packaged items). If you are interested in making a donation, please send in a note with your child and have him/her take a heart from the tree. We will be collecting for the month of February. We appreciate your generosity.

Finally, Willow Brook Farm is hosting a February Vacation Minicamp and the town offices are looking for updates for the Plainfield & Meriden Phone Book. Please see attached fliers.

Hope to see you at the school for the Winter Carnival tomorrow!

Audra

P.S. Congratulations to the PES Middle School Math Team for winning yet another math meet on Thursday (this time in Bellows Falls) and to John Mathers for placing 2nd overall!
