Principal Ponderings Graphic

Good Evening!

Two days ago I was with the 8th grade class in Boston. It was sunny and warm (like 80+) until the evening when the clouds rolled over and a lightning show canceled our Fenway fun. We had a great time and everyone kept such a positive attitude throughout. We didn’t get home until after midnight and somehow, two of our eighth graders (Ian George and Kristen Higgins) managed to show up for CVLs on Saturday. And by “show up,” I mean they performed really well. Here are the outcomes from Saturday’s meet:

Girls:

2nd place, Triple Jump: Audrey Underhill

4th place, 100m hurdles: Kristen Higgins

5th place, 4x100m relay: Audrey Underhill, Kristen Higgins, Ellis Harrington, Grayson Davies

Boys:

6th place, 4x100m relay: John Russell (Cornish), Ian George, Caelan Boynton, Teeghan Joyner (Cornish)

Teeghan also got 1st place in the 100m, 200m, and Long Jump, AND got MVP of the meet for the boys!!

Congrats to the whole team - including the coaches - for a stellar season full of personal bests and a whole bunch of really strong sportsmanship!

Speaking of races and finish lines, when I see people outside of school, they all want to know if the countdown has begun. For me, it truly did not begin until I realized today that it was time to get the “End of the Year” memo out to staff. This is the memo that details events leading up to the end of the year as well as some key “To Dos” before they depart for the summer. And while I’m looking forward to all that summer has to offer in terms of long weekends, warm temperatures, and time with friends and family, I have to admit the end of the school year always leaves me feeling a bit sad. It’s lonely around the school without all the students, staff, and families! But as of today, I can finally answer the question so many have been asking.

  • There are 10 more days for 8th graders
  • 13 days for students in grades K to 7
  • 15 days for paras and 16 days for teachers

And over the course of those “days,” there’s a LOT going on so it’s best to take it one week at a time. Here’s what we have coming up this week:

Week of June 5

  • All Week - iReady Testing continues (and hopefully finishes 🙂)
  • Monday, June 5  - 5th Grade Wax Museum - 8:30 am to 9:45 am
  • Tuesday through Thursday - 8th-grade “flour babies” project
  • Wednesday, June 7
    • 2:15 pm - Lebanon High School Seniors (PES Alums) will return for tour of PES
    • 3 pm - Last Art Club - Grades 3/4
  • Thursday, June 8
    • Offsite Evacuation Drill - dismissal from KUA (see details below)
  • Friday, June 9 -
    • 8th Grade Trip, Day Two - Six Flags
    • 3/4 Play - 1:50 to 2:50
    • PTA Potluck - 5 pm

EVACUATION DRILL MUST KNOW:

On the afternoon of Thursday, June 8th, we will conduct an Offsite Evacuation Drill. The purpose of the procedure is to make sure everyone - staff, students, local emergency responders, and partners like KUA, knows what to expect should we ever need to move students to an alternative location during a school day. This can happen for any number of reasons such as damage to the building, an unsafe situation inside our building, diminished access to our building requiring us to identify a more suitable pickup location, etc. Here’s what you need to know about the drill:

  • We will evacuate the building and then walk safely and in an organized fashion to Flickinger Auditorium
  • Emergency Responders and town officials will be helping us block/monitor traffic on the roads so our students can walk safely.
  • Dismissal will take place at the usual time - 2:50 - from the KUA campus. It is apt to take a little longer as we will need to check students off as they depart for their bus or their cars.
  • Buses should still depart on time with some minor variations as follows:
    • Students on P7 who ride the bus to Main Street on the KUA campus, will be released as walkers from Flickinger Auditorium after all other students have departed.
    • Students who usually walk or ride a bicycle from school, will ride bus P7 back to the school so they can depart from there.
  • Parents who are picking students up on Thursday:
    • Please arrive NO EARLIER than 2:45. You must enter Campus Center Drive from Main Street and follow the traffic pattern and the directions of staff.
    • We will release buses first and then move on to parent pick up which is opposite our usual procedure. (Again, please do not arrive early)
    • We also have to check students off individually as they go to their cars.
    • For these reasons, you can expect a longer wait than usual.
    • STAY IN YOUR VEHICLE. Please do not park and/or walk to Flickinger and try to come in to sign your child out. We will not be letting parents in and your attempt to do so will only cause a distraction and cause the process to take longer.
    • Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation.
  • Finally, please be sure to get any change of transportation requests into the office.  NOTE: You will need to do so by 1 pm as we will be starting the drill shortly thereafter and will not be available to take your calls.

And as we look ahead to the end-of-year festivities, please note these special announcements:
