Plainfield School District

May 19, 2005

The meeting was called to order at 7:20 PM. Present were Chair Bill Taylor, members B. Knight, B. Fleming, E. Church, C. Reynolds, S. Williams and M. Higgins.

Minutes of April 28 approved without corrections.

M. Higgins to ask Technology coordinator Mary Cantlin to save school floor plan CAD files as PDF files and post to school website. This will make them accessible to committee members, consultants and members of the public.

B. Knight reported that the State of NH will approve an 8 ft. wide walk bridge.

Bill Knight estimates that the footbridge will cost $11,000 ( inc. $6500 for steel) to build using volunteer labor.

Bill seeking black locust trees to use for the bridge planking.

Carin Reynolds to contact KUA Headmaster Mike Schafer about a donation to help defray the bridge cost .

John Taylor from Plainfield Trailblazers is working on grants and permitting for the bridge.

Carin Reynolds said the School Board approved $750 for consulting & design fees for committee work w/ Saucier & Flynn Landscape Architects.

Lighting consultant and Plainfield resident Doug Heaton gave a brief presentation to the committee. Generally, the lighting efficiency of the interior lights is OK except for the gymnasium lights. He recommends more efficient florescent lighting for the gym that will provide better overall lighting at a savings to the district. Occupancy sensors in the gym and elsewhere would also help reduce lighting costs.

He also said the district could save electricity costs by replacing older style florescent ballast’s with newer more efficient ones. He mentioned that a T8 type ballust has a life expectancy of 15 years and that many light fixtures in the school are around 10 years old.

Doug will schedule a walk thru with B. Fleming to study all lighting within the building and report back to the Committee.

The Committee proceeded to do a walking tour of the outside of the school building.

The addition of 2000 needs to have some trim boards repaired or replaced and should have all the trim painted.

The original school building has painted fir T1-11 plywood sheathing which has stood the test of time. There are a few areas that look like water damage has occurred from a leaking roof over the years and should be addressed. At the bottom of the sheathing there were a few areas that were rotted out and the non treated wall sill plates were most likely damaged. Some of the original building wood windows are rotting and the smell of mold was present.

The wing that was built in 1990 is sheathed with pine T1-11 plywood that has already had the lower section replaced within the last ten years. Some areas near window sills were bowed so that water could easily enter the wall cavity causing future rot, etc.

M. Higgins suggested that this wing receive clapboard siding and trim around windows and that any damaged sheathing be replaced if necessary.

Bill Taylor asked Committee members to work on parking lot designs for the next meeting.

Committee will invite Landscape Architect Al Saucier to the July 28 meeting.

Next meeting dates set for June 23 & July 28. M. Higgins to notify J. Nierenburg for posting dates.

Agenda items for June 23 meeting to include parking lot plan(s) review and D. Heaton lighting report.

Meeting adjourned @ 8:38 PM.

Mike Higgins
